Took a quick walk up to NY Cake & Bake this morning for a missing ingredient in our biz venture recipe testing. If you’ve never been, it’s like a boatload of  almost everything you’re looking for pastry equipment-wise, and it also sells food coloring, xanthan gum, and luster dust for cakes. It looks and feels like a cluttered sale at an old church. Anyway, I usually dread going there, because they’re usually missing what I’m looking for, and most of the times I’ve been, the service is brusque, to say the least (read those Yelp reviews, I ain’t crazy). BUT, today, one of the ladies at the counter was actually helpful. She directed me correctly, though she pointed only to the general vicinity of where that ingredient might be (“Over there.”) but she followed that up with: “If it’s not there we’ll get it for you.” GASP! Plus she was perfectly nice when I was paying. Aim low, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
